How to store your clothes properly

Winter is over. You’re not going to use your winter clothes during the warmer seasons so you can store them to open up some closet space for your desired clothes. A little effort when you pack the clothing will make a big difference when it is time to unpack for a new season.

Clean everything before packing

Any stains left on clothing will only darken and become worse during storage, so remove any stain. Cleaning the clothes also means that insects will be less likely to take up residence in your sweaters.

Choose the right storage

You can use plastic or cardboard boxes but insects might find their ways in. One of the best storage containers is an unused clean suitcase. Line inside your container with tissues to absorb some of the moisture.

Mothballs

Mothballs can be an effective way to keep out all insects. But many children and pets are naturally attracted to them with deadly results. So be careful if you’re using them.

Don’t hang everything

This might sound like a good idea but  so many clothes such as sweaters or other knit items can be misshapen or stretched by long term hanging. If you want to hang your clothes be careful and use all the hanging loops to keep the clothing from becoming misshapen. Wrap them in something breathable. Make sure there’s enough space for air to circulate, this will keep down the risk of mildew and mold.

Choose your storage area wisely

Your storage area should be clean, cool, dark and dry in order to protect your clothing. Clean your chosen place throughly and make sure it’s not close to any heat source. To avoid ruining your clothes make sure your storage place is dark. Make sure it’s also dry, because moisture attract insects.

Don’t leave your clothes in storage! Regularly check on items to make sure that there are no issues. And don’t forget to wash and clean everything before using when you take them out of storage.
