As I was thinking and analyzing people while waiting for a cab I realized so many people wear suits but not all of them know how to!
So I decided to write a few tips that might help you have a better relationship with your suits!
1. Measurmant
First step and the most important step is to know your measurements. If your suit is too tight or too loose you’ll just look ridiculous and you’re better off wearing your pajamas!
Don't be like the right guy!
2. Buttons
If you want a more formal look get a double-button jacket and if you’re going for a more casual look get a single-button one.
Buttons can help you with the size of your coat!
3. Vents
There are two type of vents, center vent and side vents. Center vent is a single vent on the center of the back and side vents are double vents with a vent on each side of the back panel.
Side vents are more formal and comfortable, so here’s your winner!
4. Lapels
Generally speaking thin lapels are more modern and thick ones are more old-school. So choose accordingly!
Pay attention to the collar!
5. Fabric
The most popular suit fabric is wool. It has the ability to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. It also breathes well, holds its shape and resist wrinkling in normal daily wear!
For warmer days you can also try linen suits.
6. Colors and Patterns
If it’s your first suit you should get a navy, grey or dark grey suit. These colors go well with almost everything. As you build your suit collection add black and then browns and earth tones. You can also include patterns like pinstripes. But for now stay away from patterns!
7. Shoes and Belts
Your belt should be thin and the same color as your shoes. You can also match your shoes to the color of your suit using this guide:
8. Socks
Make sure your socks are long enough to avoid any leg exposure while sitting down. No one wants to see your hairy legs! a few might like to see them…but ALMOST no one wants to see them.
9. Tie
The width of the tie should match the width of the lapel. It should just reach the waistband of your trousers or be slightly shorter. For color choice I’d just say your tie should be darker than your dress shirt.
10. Scissors or Stitch Remover
Last but not least is to get a pair of scissors or stitch removers. Why you ask?
So you can cut off all those tack stitching your suit comes with. Check the pockets, vents and lapels. And PLEASE cut the label off the left sleeve.
A brand new suit won’t mean anything if you go out in public still having all those tack stitching and label!
